We jump... we lose shoe
Today was jump lesson day. I opted to ride Funny alone earlier and then brought Lyric to the grid lesson with Laura and Julia. It worked out well as Smarty hadn't jumped in two months and Player hadn't done a ton. I don't remember the last time Lyric and I had jumped so it was great to get back at it. I didn't have any time to hack before but she was good about me just getting on. We walked and chatted a bit first anyways and then warmed up. I let her long trot around and then picked her up and we go tto work. She felt good and Jacel said she looked good. Yay!
We started out with some low small grids that was a bunch of one strides. And Lyric handled it great. We built up to multiple jumps but she used to not be able to handle that kind of grid work. She was great! I was not. Ha! After riding Funny.... holy cow that's a dramatic change between horses! Funny was a runaway train... Lyric is more of a push ride. I had to allow the trot but then squeeze at the base of the jump to get her to land in a canter and continue to encourage through the grid. And she never took the flyers. That's such a hard ride for me. I tend to want to take the flyers and my eye has adjusted to the longer distance. So at first, I kept jumping up her neck. Even when I was "waiting" and thought I had waited the extra stride. Nope... Lyric added one more. BUT... bless her because she went. She used to not. It helps that my balance is better in this saddle and we're both more confident and she's more comfortable. But it was aggravating to me. I managed to get it together and we had some nice jumps. We added a line with a bounce and then another line with a few singles. And she was even brave to the bounce! Good girl!
We were mostly done as it was sooooo hot and humid. Poor Lyric was puffing. Baby girl got a bit chonky with all that time off from missing shoes and all that grass! So I picked up the canter and we were going to do two more rounds so I could improve myself and as we headed towards the end of the arena, she took one funny step and then I saw a shoe fly by me. Doh! I pulled her up and she had literally cantered out of her right front shoe. Argh!! I tried to trot to see if she could just pop around one more time as I was about to be out of town the next week but she was sore. And that was the foot that she was so lame on after we added the wedges and then had to pull them back off, so... nope. We quit and I walked her home.
Luckily Patrick was able to come the next day and put her shoe back on. When I texted him (at like 7 pm) he made the comment that he was behind me earlier and could have just followed us home and put it back on. But ha! That was with Funny. I was still at Ashland. That would have been super convenient. ha ha. Not that it's not super convenient to have him come tomorrow and replace it. I'm so spoiled.
But yeah... when I get back from vacation it's time to get some fitness back on Lyric!
