Oh Lyric..

This morning they were all running around and being silly. Which, was fair. It was a bit chilly when I pulled clothes. I had to giggle though as Lyric went one way and the others went the other and she was calling to them as she was running. Hee hee. Have fun kids!

So then at lunch we met Kelli at Ashland to do a bit fitting. It started out pretty well. I put her in my normal bridle and the nathe bit and Kelli watched us go. She then evaluated my bridle and said that the crownpiece was too small and that's why it was pulling on her ears. I should have gotten the oversize. She pulled my noseband up one hole to make it not set on her molars and then reminded me to keep it super loose. So then we tried on an artemis bridle with the comfort crown. And it made a big difference. Lyric seemed happier and it defintely wasn't squishing her ears. She even felt less head tilty. So then we tried a different bit. At first, I really liked it. She seemed much straighter in her body and easier to keep her laterally straight. (Ie.. not side to side so much). She seemed much more even in the contact and connection. But she did seem a bit above the bit. But she also hasn't been ridden in a few days, so.. fine. So then we tried another bit, and then tried it upside down. She seemed good in it the first way and less above the bit, but perhaps a bit more wiggly side to side again. So then we were about to try another bit and two horses came back from trail riding. One was Weston, a cute near leopard Appaloosa. The other was Baylor, who she's ridden with. But Lyric got super distracted. And then I guess they went to load Weston and he said no so there was some drama. Just baby horse drama, but it was behind my trailer. And Lyric had decided for some reason that it was one of OUR horses so she was screaming for him. She got all worked up and was about to start spinning and running. A lot like how she was in my lesson when Dan was in the stall that she could still see!!! Oh girl.. the herdbound struggle is real. She just was getting too upset so I got off and we finally gave up and headed back to the trailer. I had to sit there a good 15 minutes before she settled enough for me to take the bridle off and put her halter back on. Then we hung out another 20 minutes or so until they got the horse on the trailer.  At this point, we had spent a LOT of time and Kelli was running out of time to ride herself, so we both tacked up. I put Lyric back in the first bit and we headed back to the arena. She kind of settled, with Marvin there. But she was still very above the bit and felt very hollow and inverted, which I had sort of noticed before. I finally get her to where she felt settled and still didn't like how she was going. So I tried on another bit, and then another. And she was just... done. She started to get squirrely again and it just wasn't a fair assessment of the bits, so I gave up. I do think we were going on 2.5 hrs at this point.

So.. it was just frustrating. At the beginning of our session she was actually processing and playing around with the changes and you could see her brain working and trying to feel her way around the differences. But then she lost it and reverted back to her thoroughbred and we were done. Even after she settled down again when the other horses left, she still wasn't in the same brain space and processing the changes and trying. So... fair enough. Baby horse, baby horse time frame.

I watched Kelli ride a bit and then she tried my saddle on Marvin and then we headed back. Kelli was sweet enough to let me take two of the bits with me to try tomorrow, so we'll give it another go.

When I got her home she drank a ton (bless her... I'm sorry I didn't offer you water.. it was cold and I didn't think!) and then took off at a run again! Ha ha.. Then after dinner she went for a roll and flipped over twice! Way to double your purchase price lady! (They say add 1K for every complete roll over!). For a minute I was worried but I think she was just rolling off the stress of the day. Because she was happily munching hay right after and let me put her blanket on without any fuss. And we snuggled some. :)
