You're so VEINy....
Today was our vet day to get Lyric scoped to make sure there wasn't any major concerns for her little nose bleeds. My gut feeling was that she just gets herself so worked up that she blows a peripheral blood vessel. But, I posted on the equine DVM page and they got me all worried about ethmoid hematomas, guttural pouch mycosis, or tumors, so.. I panicked! I also messaged Aubrey and asked her and she said she would look into it.
So... the day before I decided that I needed to get my tires rotated because the back ones were pretty thin. And I was due an oil change so.. I scheduled to drop the truck off Tuesday afternoon. Except when I did they were like.. yeah, you need new tires. There's not enough tread left to put these on front. Sigh.. I kind of knew that was coming. So they said they could get tires tomorrow and have it ready by Thursday morning. I made them promise for it to be ready before my vet appointment! And then... I asked if they could go ahead and get my recalls done by any chance! I wasn't quite next in line but the guy said that they had the part and the other people weren't answering their phones, so.. they would sneak me in. Sweet!!!
And sure enough, they had me ready by 5 pm Wednesday night but I couldn't get off work quick enough, so I went Thursday morning and got it. I had plenty of time and was even going to be early to our vet appointment. And then as I was hitching the truck up I noticed that the trailer had a flat tire. Are you kidding me?!? Argh! So.. I swapped out the spare and went to grab Lyric. I don't know if it's because she sensed danger (Ha.. I didn't realize it but my spare tire is 5" taller than my other tires so it was a bit wobbly) or it was becuase the trailer was in a different spot or what, but she got all spazzy and wouldn't load for a minute. Good grief girl... we're going to be late now! But we took a breath, I patted her and calmed her down, and we were able to get loaded and on our way.
We got to our appt and walked her into the barns. Dr Barrows came in and asked if she was always this "veiny" as she had all her skin veins a poppin'! I told her yes, when she gets anxious/nervous. So we did a rebreathing exam and didn't hear anything alarming in her lungs or trachea. yay! Lyric was mad that we tried to suffocate her though! Then we took her to the stocks, which took a minute to convince her to go in. But she was good. We tried to scope her without sedation so we could also check for laryngeal paralysis but she was not having it. We tried the twitch and it was a no go. So.. we gave up and sedated her. Dr. Chase (How cool that he's a vet now) tried first and she fought so much that we gave her a nosebleed, so we had to go to the other side. And add more drugs. But we got her scoped and she looks very symmetrical and not saggy in her largyngeal folds so we are fairly confident she is not a roarer. Yay! So then they found both ethmoids and there were no hematomas. Phew! Her guttural pouches also looked clean. so yay! She also didn't see any evidence of blood from down low. The only blood was from the scope tip where we poked her going in. BUT.. she did have a lot of varicose looking veins all over her trachea. And they looked somewhat friable or delicate. So... Dr. Barrow concluded what I had. That she just gets all worked up, her blood pressure comes up, and those little peripheral veins pop and thus.. the small nosebleed.
So... great news!! Nothing alarming or scary. But the bad news is that there's not much I can do about it other than coat her nose with vaseline, and ... get her anxiety level down. Ha ha. Which will probably get better with time and doing.
So we headed home and she got the day off because of the drugs. Plus it was sooo hot and miserable. And I went and got my trailer tire fixed so she didn't have to bump around anymore. ;)
