First Day Home

Yahooo!!! I'm off to go get the mare! Aubrey said she was a PIG in her stall! ha ha. Dangit! She turned her out in the roundpen for a bit before I came to get her. And she wallowed! So we hosed her off. Even her face. And she was good and pretty much just stood there. Good girl.

And then I let Aubrey teach me. Because I don't know much about racehorses. At all. She said that when you are leading them, you don't pull. Because pulling invitest them to pull back against you. But also make sure they aren't behind you and instead are next to you. If they are behind you they have an excuse to run into you because you will save them from danger. And if they start getting quick and pulling you, you make it clear that that is NOT ALLOWED and then go back to soft and neutral. And that's how you teach them to lead on a soft rope.

So I went to load her on the trailer and of course she stopped and said no. So then Aubrey grabbed her and she walked right on. Sigh.. of course. She hauled well. She was mostly quiet but there was some shuffling and noises.

I got her home and decided it would be best to unload her in the culdesac near the dog pasture because I was going to put her there and then I didn't have to walk her through the pasture with the other horses or risk her getting loose. So that's what we did. It took her a minute to get the hang of going down the ramp without turning around, but she did. She led quietly, but alert, to the pasture. And Mike was sweet and took some photos, during which she stood quietly. After I turned her loose she walked off and then let out a few bucks and kicks with twists and then ran around a bit with her tail up. I sat and watched. And then twice, she came up to me in the pasture and said hi. No halter... just "Hi". She was pretty chill to be honest... I was sort of expecting much more theatrics! Although at one point she did walk into the corner. The one corner of the fence that is literally a corner trap (Why they did it like that when they rebuilt the fence is beyond me... everyone knows you don't do tight corners like that in a horse field!). And not only that but the hot wire (which thankfully is not hot) is pulled across it diagonally... not into the full corner. She walked under it!!! Ack! I was waiting for the explosion, but she just calmly backed right out. Phew! And then Mike and I were working on putting together the dog shed so we had the nail gun out and the saw. And then the parasailers came out.. with their fan parasails. And she just hung out.

That night we had a pop up storm! It was crazy. Super calm then suddenly heavy wind, crazy thunder and lightning! I ended up catching the horses and putting them in stalls and she let me catch her easily and came in. They all did great overnight and she made friends with the boys! Although she was squealing at Fleck some. Hee hee.. I heard her all night long. Unless it was Fleck squealing. hee hee.
